Learning Tai Chi forms is built some good bases in the breath, balance, responsiveness, relaxation, and health at the duration of practice them. In addition, we could gradually acquire the leg strength essential to any kind of physical activity involved the whole body. However, the knowledge of the forms alone will not enable us to defend ourselves. If our intention is to learn self-defense, we must practice push hand with a training partner.
In highly competitive culture, there are many younger and students who are attracted to join the push hands movement, so that enable them to satisfy their interest and goal. Even though they may have been training for some years, they would like to learn the useful skills to creat a better oppertunity in the future. If the students wish to get the maximum benefit from studying push hands, we need to offer a rank of the non-competitive and to pursue the essentially good ideas. We shall emphasize that is not fighting and it is pure a kind of the movement for physical health. Therefore, the following points are presented for students in training push hands. These suggestions can also be a learning value in the sensitivity and the responsiveness.
In my learning push hands proceed, I insist to learn the sensitivity and responsiveness instead of the strength. In training duration, I have not care lose or win and had not emphasis to use strength. If we try to use totally muscle power against a partner, we will find that we have misread the health ideas. So I devised a training system involving turn, yield and push. In addition, these methods rely on a fixed stance which has some characteristics like the willow, it has a firmly rooted and balanced but has flexibility and resilience in its trunk and branches. Thus, when someone attempts to push us, we can avoid him by shifting our body. In such a way, the partner is never presented to exert force toward our yield. However, if we have not offered to partner no pushing point, we must sense the direction and force coming from his force. This is called for using sensitivity and responsiveness to any part in whole body. In a realistic situation, in the pushing out may be only a split second, it is very difficulty to understand the relaxing action to handle the pushing power. I think that I was kept to use turn, yield and push, so I believed continuous refined relaxing push hands to accomplish the nature responses.
In the fixed push hand, we face a partner from a fixed stance and, using only the minimum strength, attempt to push him off his balance. The partner intention is to retain his balance and, avoiding any foot movement or, short of relaying on strength, to disturb our balance. As with the form, we shall maintain in the move slowly, since we would have sufficient time to aware of partner’s response. However, in actual training will not enable us to adequately response against your partner, because it is not in the move slowly. Face a strong and agile or skilled martial art of the partner. I still am acquired under controlled relaxing conditions to deal with them. In a real situation, a partner might take the combinative movements followed by a throw. Therefore, it is necessary after some time to learn familiar response movements used in actual invert throw movements. However, in dealing with stronger and faster movements, we must continue to observe push hands principles, and keeping our stance are free of unnecessary tension and strength. Also, this advanced training does not preclude moving the feet in any direction to accommodate a more favorable position from your body.
