Developed the Tai Chi Pushing hand 

  Once you are familiar with the Tai Chi Chuan form, and can apply your knowledge to develop your defense skills with a series of movements. You will seek for the partners beginning to learn pushing hands. These basic technologies in the Tai Chi form are developed and adapted in this exercises, which are practiced between partners to heighten your anticipatory skills and reflex sensitivity, as well as to develop a harmony sense. It is a very good movement, which can promote your body stability.

  The Pushing Hands was usually translated as pushing, but was also translated as yielding. In the pushing hand, the normal response to an incoming force was required to sink, relax, and yield, since yielding provides the chance to keep in contact with a partner’s force then try to remove force direction. Pushing hands are practiced between partners to develop reflex sensitivity and to monitor a partner’s intentions coming from a relaxed physical contact. The skills are involved an extensive movements involving Word-off, Roll back, Press, and Push. And then develops the relaxed ideas, which contact with a partner’s hands to listen his or her energy. We called Listening Energy to anticipate an attack before the partner want to reach its target, and to counteract the opponent force by using the opponent’s energy against him. In this way, borrowing a partner’s strength is one of the most advanced skills in the pushing hands. If you want to use the familiar skills, first you must require yourself continued practice.

 

These sequences show how the positions, energies, and skills derived from Tai Chi Chuan are applied in self defense. The movements are basic technology to respond to an attack, and were combined with a Listening Energy in the pushing hands. There are not to set responses in advance, as there are none in genuinely aggressive situations, but it is to learn stable, relaxed, and flexible in order to counteract a coming force. For clarity, the partners are called defender and opponent, since they performed the harmony and relaxation movements went through the pushing hands. Therefore, it was not only a kind of the mutual exercise, but also was an enjoyable movement.
